Semana Santa, Holy Week

A Tradition of Faith and Passion

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is one of Spain's most important and breathtaking traditions. Held during the week leading up to Easter, it blends deep religious devotion with striking cultural heritage. Cities like Seville, Málaga, and Granada come alive with solemn processions, where centuries-old brotherhoods (cofradías) parade through the streets carrying elaborately decorated floats depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ.

The air is filled with the sound of slow drumbeats, mournful saetas (traditional songs), and the scent of incense. Participants, often wearing distinctive robes and hoods, walk in silence or bare feet as an act of penance. Each day of the week holds special significance, with Good Friday marking the most intense processions.

While some regions focus on somber reflections, others — like Málaga — add moments of celebration, blending faith with local culture. Tourists and locals alike gather to witness the moving spectacle, often staying up until dawn to catch the most iconic floats.
